Though most services provided by members of the Col. John Randolph Lane Society are geared toward local history, for people living in Chatham and neighboring counties, the group does provide a number of services to the general public even to those living far from central North Carolina.
Society reenactors, for example, participate regularly in living history events across the Southeast and beyond, allowing others to experience in person this important time in our history.
Members also participate in other events related to the period, such as a service to honor two Federal soldiers from the 37th Regiment, United States Colored Troops, who were buried near Southport, along the North Carolina coast.
In addition to donating its time, the society donates money to worthy projects that help fulfill its goals of protecting the legacy of Confederate soldiers and preserving their true history.

Battle of Sharpsburg
Lane Society member Dustin Hussey, a re-enactor with the 26th Regiment, North Carolina Troops, rests in camp before the 135th anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Sharpsburg. Held in Maryland, the massive event was just one of many living history events attended each year by members of the Lane Society. Re-enactors train all year with their units, learning about military life during the 19th century so they can provide others with a glimpse into our past.
