Those we serve
What we do

Col. John Randolph Lane Society
Service to Local Schools

For many students, the War Between the States is little but a chapter in some history text book. At best, the life and service of these 19th-century soldiers has been lost to the study of major battles and themes. In many cases, this pivotal event in our history is barely studied at all!

The Col. John Randolph Lane Society serves county schools by helping to interpret the conflict and the history of the Confederate States of America.

Class presentations. Society re-enactors provide presentations in uniform and in character to help students understand how soldiers lived, trained and fought. Groups from elementary through high school have come to see the war in a more tangible way.

Historical resources. Historical resources, such as the Roster of Confederate Veterans from Chatham County, North Carolina, and major historical volumes are donated by the society to school libraries and classes. These resources help students more completely understand local history.

Class Presentations

Society members bring history alive to students of all ages by making presentations on the life of the Confederate soldier to school groups across Chatham and neighboring counties. Students learn what it was like to serve and are able to ask their own questions about life in camp. To arrange a presentation for classes or school clubs, please contact the society.
