Sutlers followed the Confederate army, serving as a sort of mobile general store, a place where soldiers could purchase items not provided by the government. The Lane Society Sutlery offers items for sale related to Chatham County and the society. They include the Roster of Confederate Veterans from Chatham County, North Carolina; a "Victory or Death" repica pin; and homemade toys, made by the society for a living history interpretation.
We are not able to accept credit cards or orders on the Internet, but we invite you to browse the store and submit your order by US Mail. Lt. John Wesley Hanks
Chatham County native John W. Hanks longed to leave with his older brother when hostilities broke out in 1861. Honoring his father's wishes, the young, 17-year-old remained at home until months later, when he finally was allowed to join Co. G, 3rd North Carolina. Hanks was wounded in battle at Malvern Hill and Sharpsburg, even appearing in error on a list of the dead. He later was sent to train Junior Reserves among the Cherokees in western North Carolina, where he was captured by a renegade bushwhacker and sent to Johnson's Island prison camp. After surviving the war, Hanks returned home and eventually settled in Texas.
