these toys are simple devices available during the 19th century
to entertain children. All were commonly available and easily
made from material found around the home and farm.

Button and String
A noise-making toy teaching coordination and timing. When the button is placed in the center of the loop and the string is held taut between the thumbs, the button can be rotated by rapidly applying and releasing tension. As this continues, the button begins to rotate, winding the string and produces a whirring sound. Price: $1

Gee Haw Stick
The free-spinning propellor attached to this notched wooden stick can be moved by rapidly stroking the notches with another short stick. The direction of the propellor can be reversed by a subtle change in how the stroke is applied. Price: $4

Jacob's Ladder
The ingenious way thin wooden blocks are connected with a ribbon allows the connected blocks to be manipulated into different shapes. One common "trick" is making the blocks appear to cascade, by rolling the hand while holding the end block between the thumb and forefinger . Price: $8

Ox Yoke Puzzle
A test of mental and digital dexterity, the object of the Ox Yoke Puzzle is to maneuver the rings to the same side of the yoke and then back again, so one is on each side. The toy consists of a solid wooden slat with three holes, laced with a continuous cord with two suspended rings.. Price: $4
