Col. John Randolph Lane Society
Service to Confederate Veterans

Our Boys in Gray may be gone, but they are not forgotten!

The Col. John Randolph Lane Society continues to honor those who fought so galliantly for their nation by providing several services to keep the memory of their heroism alive for future generations.

Memorial services. The society honors local Confederate veterans with memorial services on Confederate Memorial Day and, at the request of a veterans' descendants, conducts services for individual veterans, often when family members are installing a new cemetery marker.

Cemetery repair. Members repair cemetery markers and grave sites of Confederate veterans who served from Chatham County or were buried within its borders.

Troops roster. The society maintains and publishes the Roster of Confederate Veterans from Chatham County, North Carolina, a list of known veterans from the county that includes their units, dates of service and burial location (if known).

Cemetery Repairs

Members Percy Horton (left) and Dennis Brooks complete cemetery repairs on the markers of Confederate Veteran Elder Dorsey Council and his wife, Frances Yates Council. Both are buried in eastern Chatham County. Private E.D. Council was a 35-year-old farmer when he enlisted in Co. E, 5th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. He fell sick or wounded at least three times during his career, but returned to service each time.
